Hone was elected to the Whangara B5 Committee of Management in 1990, and has been in the role of Deputy Chairperson for 12 years. He has spent 40 years in the educational arena in a variety of positions from a teacher, an inspector of schools to the latter part spent as a consultant developing the maori curriculum across the country.

Hone is actively involved within the local Whangara community as an elder of Whangara Marae and is Chairperson of the Whangara Church. The movie Whale Rider, saw Hone playing a integral role in providing valuable cultural advice to cast and crew.
